1980s

Christ Lutheran celebrated its 30th anniversary in 1981 with Pastor Henry Shephard as the newest leader. Continued growth drove the need for more space, so 1984 saw the renovation of the Sunday school and office building completed. Then in 1985 we broke ground for the renovation of the original sanctuary, which was now serving as the parish hall.

The husband/wife pastoral team of Reverends David Henske and Jennie Jones were installed in August of 1985; just in time for the dedication of the new parish hall on December 15, 1985. This was the beginning of leadership and service to Christ Lutheran Church for almost 20 years.

Pastor Jennie was our first woman pastor.

Living Waters was a vocal group that sang pop gospel songs as well as the old favorites. The group continued until several of the members moved away.

In the 1980s Christ Lutheran Church also started Jazz Sundays in the area. Richard Birk, the Director of the music program at Brazosport College, was a member of our church. A local jazz band made up of members from Brazosport College and other musicians in the community provided jazz versions of beloved hymns as well as instrumental jazz before and after service, and during communion. As word spread, this group began to play Jazz Sundays at other area churches as well, and even sold CDs of their worship music.
